Oneida Community Mansion House

Oneida Community Mansion House

My son and I are paranormal investigators. Last weekend my family took a friend out to see the Oneida Community Mansion House and my son caught an EVP (Electronic Voice Phenomenon--for more information on EVPs please see: AAEVP ) in the library of the Mansion House.

As we were walking through the room, my son asked, "Anybody here?" and a whisper responded, "Widow", or perhaps "Willow". [NOTE: If you click on the first audio link below, you hear my son ask, "Anybody here?" and our friend says, "They haven't found anybody yet." Then we laugh and there is some indistinguishable talking and then a voice quickly whispers what sounds to me like "Widow" or "Willow". In the second clip, I have edited out all the talking and isolated the whisper. It is much clearer on the actual tape. (Sorry.) You will have to use your BACK button to return to this page after you listen to each clip.]

For those of you who are unfamiliar with it, the Oneida Community was a religious commune during the mid-1800s comprised of a group marriage of 300 people--that is, all of the women were married to all of the men, and unlike many religions that sprung up at the time, instead of practicing abstinence, Community members were encourage to have sex with whichever of their 150 spouses they chose, as long as they didn't choose the same person too often because they didn't want people todevelop a "special love" for any one member.

Community members were encouraged to have sex with each other but were discouraged from sleeping together through the night because it was feared this would lead to them developing a special love for each other, so the Mansion House is ENORMOUS, as each member had his own bedroom. When the Community disbanded around 1880, the members all became shareholders in their silverware-making enterprise, Oneida Ltd.
